20 February 

Celebrated: Caroline Mikkelsen (born in Denmark) was the first woman to set foot on Antarctica on this day, in 1935.

See: Packed full of manor houses and castles, check out the stunning Egeskov Castle.

Shop: Every Wednesday and Saturday, outside the Concert Hall is transformed into Funen’s largest market selling fresh farm produce from the countryside.

Eat: The menu Smørrebrød changes month to month depending on what produce is in season – a traditional delight, with something for everyone.

 

21 February 

Celebrated:A French supercentenarian Jeanne Louise Calment was born on this day.  Calment had the longest confirmed human lifespan on record, living to the age of 122 years, 164 days.  

“Always keep your smile. That’s how I explain my long life,” Calment.

Eat: Le Telline – Simple, delicious food – premium quality ingredients (try their fish dishes, a must)

See: Barbegal Aqueduct – remnants of ancient flour mill – a system that could make 10,000 tons of flour a day, enough to feed a third of the city’s population back in Roman times.

Art: VAN GOGH loved this Roman city and painted many of his major works here.

Celebrated: First in 1926, World Thinking Day today was invented on this day by Girl Scouts & Girl Guides! A day of international friendship, speaking out on issues that effect girls & young women, taking on new challenges & celebrating sisterhood around the world.

Celebrated: Lawn tennis was patented on this day in 1874.  Celebrated Roger Federer‘s birth place (since he won the last Australian Open & announced he will continue to play tennis.)

  2. Explore Basel, Switzerland – home to more than 40 museums, multiple theatres & a beautiful old town in the country’s north.

Celebrated: The Mexican flag is celebrated around Mexico – thousands of people attend events held across Mexico to honour the flag, originated in 1937.

  1. Guadalajara, Jalisco – known for tequila & mariachi music, colonial architecture & artisanal treasures.
