As 2017 passed us by, it was all about the lavish escapes and Insta-worthy dining experiences. Moving into 2018 (can we believe it’s already February!), the year ahead in travel will be about heading off the beaten track and diving into new underground cultures around the world. We’ve tapped into our Insiders around the world, talked to you, our customers, looked at the latest industry news and insights to predict these five travel trends for 2018.

1. A new kind of family travel 一种新型家庭旅游

Back are the days of National Lampoons style vacations.  Modern family dynamics will innovate and reinvent family travel. Multi-generational holidays are making a comeback – Millennials are sucking it up and going on cute vacays with the families more often. This will continue to evolve this year. Often overlooked, Gen Xers might not be the largest market out there, but they are the generation with the most money and time to spend on travel.

61% of Gen Xers have children at home, meaning that family life is very much a priority and so their travel plans tend to line up with school holidays. For Gen Xers, multi-generational travel is the norm. And travel providers are already ahead of the curve – Virgin Holidays launched a new price program for single parents, and there has already been 16% growth in family bookings already in 2018. Hey, there’s Big Ben!

Health & Wellness focussed getaways were already on the rise last year, but if you thought Yoga retreats were all the rage in 2017, wait for the increase in silence, meditation & yoga retreats in 2018. This trend isn’t slowing down, with almost double the amount of people planning to take health and wellbeing trips in 2018 compared to 2017.

Retreats and namaste aside, the trend is moving this year towards holistic fitness escapes. A brilliant way to take in the local landscape, walking will be the ultimate way to explore next year, with 56% of travellers saying they want to do walking or hiking trips in 2018. Meanwhile, other health and wellness inspired activities high on the travel agenda in 2018 include visiting a spa or receiving beauty treatments (33%), cycling (24%), water sport activities (22%), taking a full body detox holiday (17%), going on a yoga retreat (16%), running (16%) and undertaking meditation/mindfulness (15%).  The growing demand for health-conscious travel will continue to rise, and travel brands are all catching wind of that.

3. Winter is really coming 冬天真的来了

Bizarre for my Vitamin D loving skin, but Winter is the new summer and will become the new peak season of choice for travellers. There has been an increase in holidaymakers flocking to Winter destinations to make the most of off-season prices and avoid crowds. A recent study claims that a majority of Winter travellers are not motivated by warmer temperatures.

A recent Qantas study  found that 79% of travellers would consider an overseas trip during the Winter, and 53% of them would not be seeking a change in weather. In fact, Winter festivals around the world are becoming a major attraction for travellers – China’s Harbin Ice Festival which had over a million visitors last year. The number of hotels opening in or around the Arctic Circle is increasing and styled for these travellers who like the cold – check out the new floating hotel Arctic Bath, soon to open in Northern Sweden.

Solo travel and independent women travelling in small groups will be an all-time high this year. Search engine pings for “solo travel” and “travel alone” were at the highest they’ve ever been in January of this year. The increase in Asian Millennials are choosing their own adventures and traveling solo more so than ever before – 70.6 million Chinese are independent travellers, accounting for 52% of all outbound trips from China. Travel companies are now building tailored solutions products to not only accommodate, but celebrate the solo traveller (cough, like chozun).

Mobile bookings are the new default way to book travel as mobile continues to change the the relationship between customers and tourism companies. Immersive experiences will reach the next level in 2018, with travellers looking to technology to help better understand a destination or accommodation before they book and making travel experience more convenience.

Based on TrekkSoft’s data, 82% of bookings were made through a tour or activity operator’s own website, and of those bookings, almost half (49%) are made on mobile.

The accessibility of apps continues to improve traveller experiences. The new Chitose airport in Hokkaido, Japan enables WeChat airline check-in functionality – another trend we’ll continue to see rise – the adoption of WeChat globally by all travel facilitators.

Artificial intelligence and digital technology are helping consumers turn the corner when it comes to smart destination intuition, reshaping the way we research, book and experience travel.

Travellers nowadays are more concerned with their psychological needs and travel experiences. We’ll see the travel industry continue to grow this year, as it does year on year and travel operators/ brands who prioritise the quality of delivering experiences and unique destinations will be the ones who thrive in 2018.

Euromonitor shows that travel and tourism continues to remain on track, outperforming the global economy, with arrivals set to grow by 3.7% and inbound receipts at a stronger rate of 4.1% over 2017, compared to world GDP at 3.5%.

By 2022, we expect that China will be the world’s largest source of outbound tourism demand, with 128 million trips, overtaking the US as the country with the highest propensity for travel abroad. Growth is set to be very strong, at 8.4% over the period 2017-2022.
